To edit an instance document, click on the Edit menu and choose the Edit file menu option, or click the Edit button on the File Operations toolbar. (NOTE: when using XML Console for the first time, you will be prompted to specify an instance editor if you haven't already done so.)
You can also invoke the instance editor by double-clicking on an instance document file from either the main window or the Project Report pane.
XML Console will look for Extensibility's instance editor XML Instance in its default directory (path: C:\Program Files\Extensibility\XI\XI.exe). If XML Instance is located elsewhere, or if you want to use a different instance editor, you can change its path in the XML Console Preferences dialog box by choosing Preferences... from the Edit menu.
